The New Currencies of Success:Self-Awareness & Self-Worth

The traditional metrics—titles, salaries, promotions—just aren’t cutting it anymore.

In today’s fast-paced world, where burnout is the norm and anxiety levels are off the charts, something profound is happening. We're collectively rethinking the way we define success. The traditional metrics—titles, salaries, promotions—just aren’t cutting it anymore. Why? Because they’re not addressing the silent epidemic of emptiness and dissatisfaction that so many of us feel.

Here’s the truth: I truly believe self-worth and self-awareness are the new currencies of success. And once you embrace this mindset, everything changes. Let me share why this shift is not just important—it’s essential.

My Journey to Redefining Success

For me, this revelation didn’t come overnight. It was a journey that began in 2011 with a deeply personal experience—the passing of my father. This moment of loss forced me to pause and ask the bigger questions:

  • Who am I?

  • What do I stand for?

  • What truly matters in my life?

This introspection led me to launch The Change School, an initiative dedicated to helping individuals and organisations navigate life’s transitions with clarity and purpose. I’ve worked with 1000’s of individuals, who, despite being outwardly successful, were struggling internally. Later, as a Director at Meta, I saw the same patterns repeatedly: high-achieving professionals battling imposter syndrome, chasing promotion after promotion, only to feel more hollow with each milestone. Even the most high-performing teams were delivering stellar results but suffering from low engagement and diminished satisfaction.

Something was missing. It was time to redefine success.

The Overlooked Connection Between Money and Self-Worth

One of the most surprising realisations from my work was how intimately connected financial wellbeing is to self-worth. Most of us don’t even recognise that our beliefs about money mirror how we see ourselves.

Think about it:

  • Are you overly anxious about money?

  • Do you avoid dealing with it altogether?

  • Do you feel like no matter how much you earn, it’s never enough?

These patterns reveal deeper narratives about your value—and they show up in other areas of your life too.

I faced this reality firsthand in 2016 when I hit what felt like an unbreakable glass ceiling in my career. Despite building multiple businesses and achieving success on paper, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t enough. It wasn’t until I began unpacking my own money stories—shaped by an upbringing with an Asian mother who emphasised hard work and a Western father with differing views on wealth—that I finally started to connect the dots.

My relationship with money wasn’t just about dollars—it was about self-worth.

Why Self-Worth Matters in Technology

Here’s where it gets even more fascinating. Self-worth isn’t just a personal issue—it’s a societal one, especially when it comes to technology. If we want to build products that genuinely serve humanity, we need to start by looking inward.

  • How can we create ethical AI systems without first confronting our own biases?

  • How can we design inclusive technologies without examining our own relationship with privilege and power?

  • How can we innovate responsibly if we’re driven solely by external validation like profits, metrics, or prestige?

The truth is, the way we build technology reflects who we are as individuals. To create tools that uplift humanity rather than exploit it, we need to operate from a place of self-awareness and genuine self-worth.

The New Framework for Success: Self-Worth + Self-Awareness

Imagine self-worth as your base currency—it determines how much value you place on your time, energy, and boundaries. Now, think of self-awareness as your exchange rate— it allows you to understand when, where, and how to invest those precious resources. Together, they form a powerful system that redefines success.

Here’s what I’ve observed over the years:

  1. Valuing yourself brings authentic success. When you understand your worth, you achieve not just results, but fulfilment—on your own terms.

  2. Money patterns reveal life patterns. Avoidance, anxiety, control—how you handle money often mirrors how you navigate relationships, career, and even self-care.

  3. Healing finances heals more than money. Shifting your relationship with money often sparks transformation in other areas of life.

Building a Better Future: Technology Rooted in Worth

The implications of this shift are enormous, especially in how we approach innovation. When self-worth and awareness guide the way, we start asking the right questions:

  • Should we build this, or are we just chasing the next shiny object?

  • How will this product impact human wellbeing in the long term—not just the company’s bottom line?

  • Are we designing with empathy and inclusion from the start, or as an afterthought?

By rooting our work in self-worth, we can create technologies that enhance rather than exploit human potential. That’s the kind of future we should all be striving for.

Your Call to Action: Reflect and Reimagine Success

This is about more than personal transformation—it’s about sparking a systemic change in how we live, work, and innovate. So, I invite you to reflect on these critical questions:

  • What patterns do you see in your relationship between self-worth and success?

  • How does your relationship with money influence your decisions, both personally and professionally?

  • What would our world look like if technology was built from a place of genuine self-worth and awareness?

The paradox is this: when we shift our focus inward—when we stop chasing external validation and start building our lives from a foundation of self-worth—we don’t just find happiness. We often achieve greater success than ever before, but on our own terms.

The future of innovation – whether in technology, business, or society – depends not just on what we build, but on who we are as builders. By recognising self-worth and self-awareness as the new currencies of success, we can create a foundation for advancement that truly serves humanity's highest potential.

It starts with you. Are you ready to value yourself like never before?
