Beyond Niching: Why Your Premise Is Your True North
"Find your niche," they say."Specialise, specialise, specialise!" But what if...you don’t want to?
In the world of content creation, entrepreneurship, and personal branding, the concept of "niching down" has been touted as the golden rule.
"Find your niche," they say. "Specialise, specialise, specialise." But for many of us, the idea of niching feels restrictive, suffocating, and, frankly, UNINSPIRING. It can feel like being forced into a box, conforming to a label that doesn’t quite capture the essence of who we are or what we stand for.
What if this widely-accepted advice is actually holding us back? What if, in our rush to categorise ourselves, we're missing something far more powerful? What if, instead of niching, we focused on something deeper, more meaningful, and more aligned with our core beliefs? What if we focused on our premise?
Enter the concept of premise – your fundamental belief system and unique perspective that transcends the limitations of traditional niching.
My Problem with Niching
Niching feels safe. It's neat, categorical, and easy to explain. It's what makes others feel comfortable – they can put you in a tidy box and feel like they understand exactly what you do. "I'm a fitness coach for new moms", "I cover AI trends." or "I teach Instagram marketing to real estate agents."
To me this approach can become a creative prison, forcing multifaceted individuals (like myself) to compress their expertise and passion into increasingly narrow boxes. Just the thought of niching makes me want to curl up in a ball! It feels like being forced back into a box that I've worked so hard to break free from.
A niche is the surface-level container, but it’s not the substance that fills it.
The reality is that human beings are complex, and our value proposition often lies in the unique intersections of our experiences and perspectives. When we focus solely on niching, we risk losing the very essence that makes our work compelling.
This is where the premise comes in.
The Power of Premise
Your premise is your worldview – the lens through which you see your field(s) and the unique perspective you bring to it. Unlike a niche, which tells people what you do, your premise tells them why you do it and how you think about it.
Your niche represents your subject matter - the specific topics and areas you focus on. Meanwhile, your premise embodies your unique perspective and approach to those topics. Your niche sets the boundaries of your content, but your premise shapes your message and builds your reputation.
Let me share my journey with my premise as an example: My core premise has always centred around the belief that when individuals uncover their values, embrace their inherent worth, they develop the resilience to navigate change and live life on their terms, becoming forces for good in the world. This foundation has evolved over time, and currently, I'm passionate about driving what I call a 'Worth Revolution' through Worth-Centered Leadership. By helping individuals step into their power and lead from a place of worth rather than fear, I believe we can create a society where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.
This premise transcends traditional market categories because it speaks to a fundamental human truth. Whether I'm working with an individual navigating a career transition or consulting with a large organisation or startups, the core message remains the same: when we lead from a place of understanding and honouring worth – our own and others' – we create ripple effects that benefit everyone.
Premise vs. Niche in Action
Let's look at some clear examples that show the powerful difference between stating a niche and leading with a premise:
Niche: "I teach productivity techniques for business owner."
Premise: "Productivity isn't about doing more – it's about creating space for what truly matters."Niche: "I'm a leadership coach for high performing teams"
Premise: "True leadership emerges from vulnerability, not authority."
Notice how each premise transforms the conversation from what you do to why it matters and how you think about it. This shift creates a foundation for deeper engagement and more meaningful impact.
My Journey: From Premise to Natural Niches
Those who know me understand that I'm inherently multi-dimensional and multi-hyphenate – I've always resisted being put in boxes. Yet here's the beautiful paradox: while I firmly believe in embracing our complexity, I've learned that people need to know what you stand for. That's where premise becomes so powerful.
In my own journey, I've discovered that when you lead with a strong premise, niches emerge naturally and organically. These audiences weren't chosen through market research; they were drawn to my premise and the way I saw the world. When you allow your authentic premise to guide you, you create deeper connections with audiences who truly align with your vision and values.
This organic evolution is far more powerful than starting with a niche in mind. When you allow your authentic premise to guide you, you create deeper connections with audiences who truly align with your vision and values. These natural niches become communities that gather around your ideas, rather than demographic boxes you're trying to fit into.
I'm exploring now what I call a 'Worth Revolution' through Worth-Centred Leadership – an evolution that emerged from the past few years of seeing how fundamental worth is to creating lasting change.
My premise has ALWAYS naturally attracted diverse audiences, all united by a desire for meaningful change:
Career Changers: Supporting them with a foundation of self-belief and clarity for value-aligned decisions
Leaders and Founders: Fostering cultures of innovation that unlock positive disruption, growth & social change whilst building authentic, human-centred products
Women: Empowering them to challenge limiting beliefs and step into their power, especially around wealth and wellbeing
Communities: Creating environments where individuals feel valued and empowered, fostering collective growth and positive change
Businesses: Helping organisations stay ahead of the curve while building authentic, human-centred products and driving responsible innovation
Why Premise Trumps Niche
Longevity: While niches can become outdated as markets shift, a strong premise remains relevant because it's rooted in fundamental truths and perspectives.
Authenticity: Your premise naturally flows from your experiences and beliefs, making it easier to create genuine content that resonates with your audience.
Flexibility: A premise gives you the freedom to explore various topics and pivot as needed, while maintaining a consistent thread that ties everything together.
Deeper Connection: When people connect with your premise, they're connecting with your worldview, not just your expertise in a specific area. This creates stronger, more lasting relationships with your audience.
Finding Your Premise
To uncover your premise, ask yourself:
What fundamental beliefs guide your work?
What's the core message you want to share with the world?
What common wisdom in your field do you disagree with?
What transformation do you want to create in the world?
What unique perspective has your journey given you?
Your premise might challenge conventional wisdom. It might make some people uncomfortable. That's good – it means you're saying something worth saying.
Moving Forward
This isn't about abandoning your expertise or the topics you cover. Instead, it's about elevating your work by anchoring it in what truly matters to you and your unique way of seeing things. When you lead with your premise:
You live a life in more alignment with your core values
Your content becomes more distinctive
Your message reaches beyond temporary trends
Your work attracts people who share your values
Your impact grows more meaningful
In a world that often pressures us to fit into predefined categories, choosing to stand for something real and meaningful is a radical act. Your premise is your compass, your anchor, and your unique contribution to the world. So, don't just niche down—stand up for what you believe in. That's where true connection and impact begin.
Remember: Your niche might tell people what box to put you in, but your premise tells them why they should care in the first place. In a world hungry for authentic voices and meaningful perspectives, that makes all the difference.
